BARRY HARRIS

Pianist and educator Dr. Barry Harris grew up in Detroit and by his 30s was already developing into one of the most important cultural ambassador’s of the music created by Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and others knows as Bebop. Barry sat in with Charlie Parker as teenager, worked with Miles Davis and Gene Ammons before joining Max Roach’s group, which led him eventually to NYC, where he worked and record with legends such as Coleman Hawkins, Dexter Gordon, Cannonball Adderley, Lee Morgan. Parallel to his playing career, Barry developed and refined concepts and theories of music which made him the worlds most celebrated jazz teacher. As a young man he shared his theories with the likes of Joe Henderson, Paul Chambers, and John Coltrane, and in later years he began to lead formal classes with a dedicated global following. Barry passed away in 2021 at the age of 91.
