Toninho Horta Quartet @ Green Block & Studios

Master Composer, Guitarist and vocalist Toninho Horta is a legend of Brazilian music whose influence has also shaped contemporary jazz globally. An early break with Milton Nascimento led him to work with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ellis Regina, Sergio Mendes, and Chico Buarque, among a host of Brazil’s greatest musical icons. He released his debut solo album Terras Dos Passaros in 1980 and has been recording steadily since, winning a Grammy in 2020 with the album Belo Horizonte. Horta lived in the US in the 1990s and established close musical partnerships with a who’s who of American jazz musicians, working with the likes of Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny and Herbie Hancock. Joining in his quartet will be two young giants, 24 year old piano prodigy Tyler Henderson and the great journeyman bassist Alex Claffy. Rounding out the band will be Horta’s colleague for over 50 years, master percussionist Duduka da Fonseca.

Both traditionalist and modernist, he has performed all over the globe, and recorded ten albums under his name. Pelt’s CV includes working with Cedar Walton, Louis Hayes, Ravi Coltrane, Frank Foster, Jimmy Heath, Nancy Wilson, and The Skatalites. He was also the subject of a recent New York Times piece about his four volume series of written portraits entitled “Griot: Examining the lives of Jazz’s great storytellers.” Pelt has been a long time mentor to younger up and coming musicians, and will be joined by his quintet of some of the music’s most exciting young players.

Grammy nominated Pianist Benito Gonzalez has absorbed the influences of such pianists as Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett while remaining rooted in the traditional folk music of his native Venezuela. Winner of The Great America Jazz Piano Competition and a Steinway & Sons artist, Gonzalez came to prominence in the band of saxophone legend Jackie McLean, and has been an important voice in the bands of Kenny Garrett, Pharoah Sanders, Bobby Hutcherson, Christian McBride, Nicholas Peyton, Jeff ”Tain” Watts, Buster Williams, and Antonio Sanchez.
